Montreal, June 30, 1998
In collaboration with La Ronde and la société du parc des Iles de
Montréal, the AQAF (Association Québécoise de Aqi-Footbag) is
proud to present the 19th edition of the World Footbag Championships, from July 13
to 19, 1998.
The sport of Footbag, which has been better known by its recreational form, is, without
a doubt, part of a new generation of sports. The ability needed to play this sport
has made it world renowned, and the ever-increasing numbers of athletes and fans
around the world prove that Footbag is here to stay.
It is with great enthusiasm that the AQAF is organizing this event for the second
time. Some of you may recall the 1996 edition, when local heroes Sebastien Verdy
and Emmanuel Bouchard won the Net Doubles with Verdy doubling up with the win in
Net Singles. That year, the event had a tremendous success.
We now know that Montreal boasts one of the most important contingent of star players
around the world, which makes it the ideal city to hold this prestigious event.
Here are some descriptions to help you visualize Footbag:
Footbag Net: This event can be thought of as foot volleyball. It is played on a badminton
court with a 5-foot net, either singles or doubles. Players serve, set, spike and
dig the footbag with their feet the way they would with their hands in volleyball.
It is the only sport in the world that is played exclusively with the feet.
Footbag Freestyle: This is the artistic side of the sport. Singles and doubles routines
are judged in the same way as figure skating or gymnastics routines. Players complete
unbelievable sequences, including jumps, spins, stalls (where the footbag is "held"
by a certain part of the body); all choreographed to music. It is truly difficult
to imagine without having seen it.
You are invited to come and see the semi-finals as well as the finals for both Net
and Freestyle, held at La Ronde on the 17, 18 and 19th of July,1998.
Satisfaction Garanteed!
