VANCOUVER OPEN 96 WAS A BLAST!

At our beautiful site in Stanley Park, we kicked some serious Footbag Net and Golf Aug 24th to 25th.

We enjoyed ....... Sunny days, free fruit and drinks galore, fierce & friendly competition, "west coast" (delicious-but-mysterious-to-some) lasagne, microbrew beer for cheap, a pool and darts partying zone, skookum prizes for everyone who came, AND 61 awesome competitors from Alberta, Washington, Oregon, California, Greater Vancouver, Denmark and Vancouver Island.

HUGE thanks to all of our sponsors:

Patagonia, Cafe Zen, Sunset Grill, Adidas, Pastime Sports, Flying Clipper, Creative Athletics, Da Pasta Bar, Urban Juice and Soda Co., Elwood's Joint, Odwalla, Kick the Habit, Kick in the Grass, Teva, Simple Shoes, Mattel Sports, Ecomarine Kayak, PowerBar, Coffee Roaster, Creekside Architects, Wild West Organic Harvest, W.E.C.A.R.E. Sports and Eastside Datagraphics... ... AND to the Vancouver Parks Board, the tournament staff, the out-of town volunteers, the ANZA, and all the kickers who participated in making this Tenth Anniversary tournament something special!

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - March 23 1997

All members are invited and encouraged to attend. A new Board of Directors is elected each year at this meeting, by the general membership. As well we will be discussing upcoming Vancouver tournaments, demonstrations, training clinics, camping trips, and other club activities. Location/time T.B.A.

11TH ANNUAL VANCOUVER OPEN
August 2 - 3 1997

As the World Championships this year will be right next door - Portland, Oregon - we have changed our regular tourney dates. This allows the Vancouver Open to be a regional Worlds Warm-up for all kickers in the Pacific Northwest, and for those whose travel plans can include the stopover.

W. A. K. F. U. - WAHOO !!!

Hear ye - Hear ye! Let the word be spread throughout the land... That the King of the Border is.... His Divine Majesty, Chris "Gator" Routh, of Seattle, Washington. All Hail to the King!!! This past September, the international conspiracy known as W.A.K.F.U. (Washington And Kitsilano Footbag Union) held a doubles net tournament at the Canada/U.S. border crossing. The "Ruler of the Court" structure was used in this tourney - which means that you change partners after each match, until you have played with everyone in your pool. Therefore those who win not only demonstrate individual skill - but also ability & versatility in playing well with different partners, different styles of play. Much honour to the 26 contestants in this struggle for the crown. May we see all of you again at next season's battle for the throne!

THE BEST LAID PLANS...

The February Net Clinic with Mag Hughes may be cancelled due to gym unavailability. However, given the overwhelming interest shown in attending this event, we will try to reschedule. Call for information.

FOOTBAG SPIKES TO NEW HEIGHTS

A new Guinness World Record for women's consecutives was set by Tricia George of Oregon, in September 1996: 20,717 kicks.

There are currently over 200 footbag clubs on the planet, kicking in 16 countries.

The Footbag Worldwide website has been lauded in several "CoolSite" lists, shown on the CNET television program, and listed in the Official Lycos Guide to the world's most popular internet sites.

Adidas 14 and 32 panel freestyle footbags are expected to be sold in sports stores across Canada by April 1997.

Media coverage at Worlds 1996 in Montreal included the CBC, ESPN, Sports Illustrated and MTV. Our strong presence at Worlds 1996 earned the KFA third place for the Club Award for total points accumulated.

The World Footbag Association has an active membership roster of over 40,000.
