Advance Press Release

June 30, 1996.

The 10th Annual Vancouver Open Footbag Tournament, presented by the Kitsilano Footbag Association, will be held the weekend of August 24-25, 1996 at Brockton Oval in Stanley Park.

This event marks our 10th Anniversary for this tournament and will feature world class contenders in the sport, returning from the 17th Annual World Footbag Championships -- held for the first time on Canadian soil, in Montréal.

The Vancouver Open will attract participants from around the world, and offers events for all ages and skill levels. This year there will also be a special area for younger children, featuring a child-sized net court and other activities.

Footbag is commonly known by the brand name Hacky Sack - often seen played in circles, where players work together to defy gravity by keeping the footbag off the ground with their feet. At this tournament, players will be competing in Footbag Net, Footbag Golf, and "shredding" in freestyle circle jams.

Footbag Net is most easily described as a cross between tennis and beach volleyball, played on a badminton-sized court, over a five foot net - except played (you guessed it!) with the feet. Events will be Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles, in divisions of Novice, Intermediate and Open. Footbag Golf is similar to disc golf; players complete a course by kicking the footbags into "holes", which are inverted cones placed around the course.

The sport of footbag is currently played in 15 countries, with over 160 clubs and associations. But it is still played in its greatest numbers here at its birthplace, the West Coast of North America.

We will be keeping you up to date with the latest details one week preceding the Tournament. Please contact us if you have any questions.
