Introduction
Hello! Welcome to the home page of the Bay Area Footbag League!
The Bay Area Footbag League is a group of about 50 players throughout the
extended
San Francisco Bay Area dedicated to promoting the alternative sport of
footbag.
(We have a special Santa Cruz Chapter with its
own home page.)
The Bay Area Footbag League works in conjunction with its sister
organization BAFF, Inc. to put on various
tournaments and events throughout the year.
BAFL co-hosts the
Western Regional Footbag Championships with the
Stanford
University Footbag Club, and hosted the
World Footbag Championships for two years in a row (in '94 and '95).
BAFL Weekly Kicking Schedule
BAFL is probably the largest footbag club in the world, as is evidenced by the
outstanding number of organized and informal kicking opportunities it provides for its members.
The on-line BAFL KICKING SCHEDULE
has a list of the regular BAFL kicks every week in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Feel free to attend any BAFL kick, regardless of your skill level or
experience. We are here to teach and help the sport grow by giving everyone
a chance to enjoy footbag at all levels. Come to any and all of our scheduled
kicks and be sure to introduce yourself the first time you come out.
You can count on our kicking schedule, especially if you follow the directions
for calling to double-check any given kick. But, without fail there
is always the following weekly kick, and all are invited:
- Golden Gate Park (San Francisco)
-
SUNDAYS, 1-5pm, on JFK Drive within the Park, approximately
one block west of Stanyan St.. (The meadow is called "Peacock Meadow",
although the name of the meadow is not on any maps. Find the Conservatory
of Flowers, and we are in the next meadow east along JFK Drive.)
-
NOTE: Because of El Niño, the field at Peacock Meadow has been
flooded several times. If you go to Peacock Meadow and nobody is there --
go to Hippie Hill! We are probably just a few hundred feet to the
south, across the street and over the hill. You can't see Hippie Hill from
Peacock Meadow, but it's very close. Go due south from Peacock Meadow, following one of several
paths that take you over or around a small wooded hill just alongside the tennis courts, and you end up at Hippie Hill. This
spot is located between JFK and Kezar Dr. just west of Stanyan St. inside
the park. If you get lost, ask for the Carousel; Hippie Hill is visible
from there.

More Info On BAFL
BAFL membership includes some of the best players in the world of
footbag.
Here are just a few of the professional footbag players in BAFL:
-
Julie Symons (jsymons@cup.hp.com) - one of the top
women players in footbag, Julie is a regular at almost all BAFL kicks (both net
and freestyle). She was the '94 women's overall world footbag champion.
-
Peter Irish - 1995 World Freestyle Champion (as well as 1991, 1992, and 1993) and member
of the Big-Add Posse, Pete recently moved to the Bay Area from Virginia Beach, Virginia.
He's a regular at the Sunday freestyle jam in Golden Gate Park, and you may even be
able to get him on the net court once in a while.
-
Lisa McDaniel (tao@dnai.com) - another of the top women players in the
sport, Lisa has many singles and doubles titles under her belt, in both net and
freestyle.
-
Brent Welch (brent.welch@eng.sun.com) - an avid
footbag net player and skilled competitor, Brent and his partner Alf have been a serious
force in footbag net, making it all the way to the finals in '95. Brent is always
willing to take new players aside and show them the basics (as well as more advanced techniques).
-
Jody Welch (jbwelch@aol.com) - yes, there is a relation.
Jody and Brent are a dynamic footbag duo, with many world mixed doubles net titles
to prove it. Jody is 5-time women's overall world footbag champion --
one of the major forces to reckon with in professional footbag net.
-
Alf Marcussen (alfandalf@aol.com) - a soccer player turned footbag
professional, Alf moved to San Francisco from Norway several years ago. He is
fun to watch on the net court, and is a great teacher of up-and-coming players.
-
Sam Conlon - one of the top personalities in the sport, Sam has
dazzled audiences on television around the world with her amazing freestyle
skill and finesse. A regular at the Sunday freestyle jams in Golden
Gate Park, Sam has more women's freestyle world titles than
anyone else.
-
Tim Kelly - clearly one of the top freestylers, and a member of the Big-Add Posse,
Tim frequently appears at the Sunday freestyle jam in Golden Gate Park.
-
Byron Proshold (Byron.Proshold@wj.com) - one of the Bay Area's up-and-coming
net players, Byron won the '94 intermediate title in singles net, and is
a regular at the net games in Mountain View.
