My faves are Kyuss, Queens of the Stoneage, 80's Soundgarden, Green River, Primus, and The Desert Sessions recordings as far as metal goes.

I find it disturbing that nobody has mentioned Pantera yet.

on the tangent of gothic bands, have any of you guys heard The Cure? they are my favorite band, and oh so sad... really nice softer gothic music. have a nice day.

I like pretty much every type of music you can imagine, but...The Cure? Gimme a break; new wave sucked and it still sucks.

Ok, I'm retarded and I only read the first page of this thread. Sorry about that.

Someone mentioned Tolkien-inspired metal; (the Summoning, I believe it was?) check out Blind Guardian if you like that kind of stuff.

New age metal is hard to come across a really good band that isn't sucked in by the mainstream and basically sold out. I enjoy prog. metal as much as the hardcore stuff here's my recomendations:

Tool
Into Eternity
Opeth
Hammerfall
Dreamtheater
Evergrey

Blind Guardian & Iced Earth, even.
For me, it's a mix of taste. One of my favourite bands is Opeth, naturally. I also like In Flames, Children of Bodom, Blind Guardian, Dream Theater, and even most of the Slipknot stuff (vol.3 was a good album). Also, bands like System of a Down, Slayer, Soulfly, Killswitch Engage and Therion always have a special place in my mp3 player. I'm sure I'm forgetting a whole bunch of awesome artists, but that's what I can name off the top of my head.

I'm planning to go to the Children of Bodom concert which is coming up soon - should be tons of fun.

Aww man, no way. You can't have hardcore rock without linkin park. I'm sure yur prolly bashing them for their radio tunes. I myslef dont like alot of the more popular songs. dig into them deeper, I'm sure you'll find sumthing good.

-Josh

P.S. I know their not heavy metal, but Queen, Boston, Led Zepplin and Van Halen even thought they're old, are still pretty good

Definitely worth checking out:

http://www.fuzzrock.com/

They have an MP3 jukebox for you to sample hundreds of songs from the bands of this genre including: Clutch, Monster Magnet, Corrosion of Conformity, Fu Manchu, Nebula, Hawkwind, Atomic Bitchwax etc.

I have a "Fuzz Rock" playlist on my ipod. Great for footbagging! Cool
